The Virtual Lenses - Field of Vision
Though we have framed up both shots here as close-ups (CU), they are distinctly different. The change is due to the field of vision the viewer has, and this is similar to the the effects of using a zoom lens on your camcorder or stills camera. (Have you noticed the button on your camera with automatic zoom says T and W. The T is for telephoto, the W is for Wideangle, a zoom lens is two lenses in one.) In Second Life the zoom lens is controlled by pressing (Cmd + 8) to zoom out and (Cmd + 0) to zoom in. Similar effects to real life lens can be experienced with this command, Zooming out makes the angle of the field of vision larger, whilst zooming in making the angle smaller. Changing the Field of Vision has an impact on the position of the camera operator. As you can see with the above examples, to frame a close-up with a wideangle lens, the camera and subject need to be closer together, whereas with a telephoto lens, the operator needs to move further away to get the same framing of subject. ( So remember that, when you've got a cliff behind you !!)
